About Me

StrUHT (pronounced like “what”) is the stage name of Dennis J. Colwell.

Dennis says he is a “Jack of all trades, but a master of one.” He’s still trying to figure out what that “one” is. Perhaps it might be poetry.

Dennis wrote his first poetic piece around age 11 and he’s continued to write since then. Only recently has he made some of his writings known through public readings while also showing some talent for poetic improv. Though he tends to favor a “Def Jam” style of writing and reciting, Dennis’ poetry embraces all styles and covers a variety of subjects.

When asked about his writings, Dennis responds, “My writing is an exploration of my desires, delights, defeats, dislikes, and destiny. There is love and hate, anger and sadness, helplessness and hope, lust and purity, and darkness and light. I find my writing is the only honest medium to and through which I can talk to myself about myself. But my writings aren’t all about me; what I hope transcends my personal reflections is God’s reality and reign over my life.”

Dennis reveals that the stage name “StrUHT” is an acronym, standing for “Straight Up Holy Theology”. When asked about the name, Dennis says, “The meaning represents my intention to reconcile all of my poetry, in one way or another, to my Christian faith. There is a certain theological worldview that colors my writings. Given that commitment, the challenge for me is to say something meaningful yet entertaining, tickling the ears while stimulating the soul, all the while remaining true to my faith.”

“In short, StrUHT is the merging of a man, a mindset, and a mission through the medium of poetry. I hope that through spoken word, I can open up minds and hearts to see life in new ways and to pursue true purpose and meaning in living.”

Now the Real Scoop on Me!

(Last revised: 12/3/2006)

Now let me really tell you a thing or two about myself.

I love sports and I’m a rabid football fan. I’m a lifetime Washington Redskins fan and I won’t change ever!

I am very much a techie and I’m on my computer seemingly everyday. For those really steeped in geekery, I’m currently specializing in C# programming on the .NET platform. I certainly know my way around ASP.NET and I’m working on upping my expertise with Microsoft SharePoint. The new Office platform will afford me a lot of development opportunities. Though I love my PCs, I do plan on getting a Mac. I pick new technology up fairly easy, but I’m not averse to reading “Dummies” books to help me out.

I love digital photography and image editing. I’m a proficient Photoshop’er, but I can get better. At some point, I’ll start playing with GIMP. I’m working on increasing my skills with audio tools. Right now, I’m using Magix Music Editor 11. Ugh, it has a ton of features and I’m still a novice with it. Even so, be on the lookout for remixes of some of my poetry. At some point, I will get my podcast launched and running as well.

I have a Playstation 2, but I think I’ll wait a while before jumping into a PS3. I love to watch movies and I’ve got at least 300 DVDs to prove so.

Don’t get me on a bowling alley… I just might surprise you!

I love doing volunteer work. I used to be a tutor, specializing in math, for several years. However, I’m in “retirement” from that at the moment. I currently volunteer at my church and at a local soup kitchen.

No pets at the moment, but I’m thinking about getting a Labrador. I currently reside in the Central Texas area.

    Hey Will –

I don’t know what it is but I’ve always been “funny” about posting my e-mail address. I guess I get enough spam as it is. Alright then… I’ll put it up for the world to see!! Yikes! ;-) Wow, a featured guest?!?! I’ll give you a shout. Thanks for the kind words and for reading and listening to the pieces.
